Following the High Falls Gorge, we travelled a few miles further up Route 86 to the crossroads at Wilmington, NY. Taking a westerly route from there, we ascended Whiteface Mountain via the Veteran's Memorial Highway. This highway is 8 miles long, and the toll for a motorcycle with 2 riders was $14. The ride and views offered were outstanding. On the day we went, the visibility was 5 - 10 miles, with a broken cloud deck just a few hundred feet over us. On a clear day, you can see as far as Montreal, Canada. It is too bad the road closes at 6pm, as the view must be quite awesome on a clear night.

There is a 450' tunnel at the top that takes you to an elevator, for a 250' ascent to the summit. For the more adventurous, you can take the hiking path from the gift shop to the summit. (We took the elevator up and the foot path back down to the gift shop).
