After unpacking and getting my bearings (with the help of the Concierge), I walked about 9 blocks west to the National D-Day (WW 2) museum.
I had lunch first at a small cafe, then spent the greater part of the afternoon at the museum. It is 3 stories of exhibits, the top floor devoted to the Pacific Campaign, the 2nd floor for the European, and the 1st floor having vehicles, aircraft, and boats that were used in the war. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the C-47 that are pictured are flyable.
While there, I talked to one of the volunteers who happened to be a retired Lt. from the New Orleans FD. He told me that Katrina actually did very little damage to the museum. The real damage came afterwards when looters drove a vehicle thru the front glass doors. Due to the construction of the building, they were not able to get at any artifacts, tho. They made off with some gift shop items, instead. He told me that many of the looters in the area were professionals that came into the area with pickup trucks adorned with magnetic construction company logos. They got past the security and took what they could.
Following the museum, I stopped back at the hotel briefly, then went off to the French Quarter.

These are great. I'm going to have to add this museum to my list of places I'd like to visit!
