Cub Scout Winter Event

Last Friday Night and all day Saturday, the boys and myself spent some time camping with our group. This year, the campout was held at Stambaugh Scout Reservation. This was a different place than years past, and the facilities were very nice for a camp. Our cabin was very roomy and warm with the wood stove all night.

We were up at 6am on Saturday for breakfast. The flag ceremony was shortly after 8am, and then it was time for the games and festivities.

We started out with a talk on basic aeronautics, which was presented by the local model airplane flying club. They brought many examples of different sizes of model aircraft. All the planes they brought were capable of flight. All the boys got to try their hand at the flight simulator before the next station.

The next station involved 3 activities. The first one paired up the boys to make a rope out of baling twine, by twisting it till the twine formed a rope about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. Then they had a 4-way tug of war on the commons. The last station was a team building effort where the boys tried to lift a large ball on a bucket using rope from 4 sides.

After lunch, the boys were treated to a model helicopter stunt show and model airplane demonstration. Both were very impressive. The helicopter was capable of flying upside down and many other tricks, while the plane could fly up to and over 100mph.

We then went to the Geocaching station. CJ and JA both have experience geocaching with their Papa and Aunt Jennifer. CJ was the first to find his cache, where they got to collect their prize of a numbered token (proof of getting there) and a small bag of candy. The boys then helped the other kids find the other 2 caches.

Our last station was an obstacle course (one was done blindfolded), and a "sort of" soccer game with 2 large balls and a lot of chaos.

After a long day, it was good to get home late this afternoon. Both boys had a great time, and remarked that this is always their favorite activity in scouts.
