Shot Tower State Park

Last week, we travelled to Myrtle Beach with our friends, the Stones.

Our traditional first stop on our way to Myrtle Beach has always been either to Tamarack (in WVA), or to the Shot Tower Park in Virginia.  This year, the shot tower won out.  While there we had a picnic lunch, let the kids run around, and then toured the tower.  Being able to look in the tower was a a suprise as it has been closed and locked up for years now.

This tower was built in the early 1800's and was utilized for the manufacture of lead shot for muzzleloaders.  It stands 75' tall and has a 75' shaft below.  The lead would fall the 150' and be caught in a large kettle of water at the bottom.  The shot was then retrieved next to the New River.  Additional information on this landmark can be found here.
